History of King Tiger Tae Kwon Do

King Tiger TKD has been offering instruction and training in Tae Kwon Do in North Carolina since 1988. Formally known as Wang-Ho, it was originally founded in Korea by a ninth degree black belt, Grandmaster Jung, Byung Hwa, in 1959. By his late twenties Grandmaster Jung had achieved mastership in Tae Kwon Do and had served extensively in the Korean Military, teaching troops hand to hand combat skills through the art of Tae Kwon Do. In 1959 Grandmaster Jung opened the first King Tiger Academy in Seoul Korea. Today, there are over one hundred and twenty King Tiger Tae Kwon Do schools on four continents with over thirty in Seoul alone. One of the first US King Tiger Academies was established by Master Byung Seouk Lee in Greenville, NC in 1988. Since then our training and philosophy has become one of the fastest growing programs on the East Coast - a great source of comfort for the soul.

Here at King Tiger TKD we are focused and determined to serve our students with the highest quality instruction, professionalism, and service in the industry. To achieve our goal we have implemented programs that cater to the individual interests of our community. Our Students range from all ages with a variety of interest. These interests include stress relieving, health promoting exercises, intense to traditional training that the Martial Arts are so famous for. We have three main goals for our students:

LEARN PRACTICAL SELF DEFENSE: King Tiger TKD has a system of natural, easy to learn movements, which are designed to allow individuals aged young and old, male or female, to defend themselves against aggressive, often larger opponents.

PROMOTE BETTER HEALTH: In order to eliminate wasted motion and promote increased speed and power, students are taught to become more relaxed and fluid. The way we train also has an aerobic effect. This improves the cardiovascular system (hearts and lungs) and accelerates the body's metabolism, causing you to burn more calories and to lose weight. Regular training also results in increased balance, flexibility, strength, muscle tone, speed, coordination, and improved reflexes and timing! Once in better health, you will not only look better and feel better, you will also have a lot more energy to do the things you enjoy.

DEVELOP A STRONG MIND: In this aspect, our curriculum surpasses all other exercise and sports activities. Our program is taught according to individual needs and levels of skills. Through our instructor's guidance and encouragement, students begin to establish, and actually achieve, personal goals. Students learn that, by setting realistic goals and applying dedication and hard work, anything is possible. They develop confidence! The virtues of Respect, Concentration, Discipline, and Motivation are the characteristics of a truly confident individual. All these, and more, are stressed by our Staff. We are a Black Belt School

Many people misunderstand the concept of the black belt. A black belt, itself, is not the ultimate achievement in the Martial Arts. There are actually 10 different levels of the black belt, the first of which signifies that the student is ready to begin the advanced level of training. It takes an adult approximately 3 years to achieve the first level of black belt, and every new student should look at this belt as a realistic goal. Remember, goals are needed in order to keep you focused while you are acquiring the skills needed to achieve them. Much like college, the goal of an Associate Degree helps keep you motivated to complete your two years of study, enabling you to realize some tangible benefit for your efforts. Think of your black as a 3 year degree.

Students are expected to set goals and commit themselves to achieve them. Individuals who wish to become King Tiger TKD students, should expect to attend at least two classes per week.

Our classes are taught by certified black belt instructors, who care about their students and conduct themselves accordingly. They help students to learn and to improve themselves through positive support and encouragement, not through intimidation!
